[WHRD Alert] MEXICO / Intimidation of Claudia Zenteno and shut down of her home in Xochimilco, Mexico City

Claudia Zenteno

Activity:
Defense of land, territory, and the environment

FACTS – On 10 June, public officials from the Xochimilco Mayor's Office went to the home of WHRD Claudia Zenteno, accused her of having a clandestine water supply, and on the following day – 11 June – proceeded to seal off the home. This took place after the WHRD spoke out against informal settlements, the Metrobus expansion, changes in land use, and the construction of recording sets in territories classified as conservation land in Xochimilco, Mexico City.

Claudia Zenteno experienced a similar situation in 2006, when her home was shut down and a long process was resolved in her favor in 2008. She is a beneficiary of the Federal Mechanism for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists since 2019.

We of IM-Defensoras and the National Network of Women Human Rights Defenders in Mexico denounce these actions, which we consider as intimidation with the objective to inhibit and sanction the important work of defending the territory that Claudia Zenteno has been carrying out for twenty years in Xochimilco.
