Breaking and entering

THE FACTS – On Tuesday, August 27, members of the Petén Ixqik Women’s Association arrived at the premises of the Comprehensive Support Center for Women Survivors of Violence (CAIMUS) in Petén and found the office doors open with indications that a search had taken place. The Association filed a criminal complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

This incident is highly disturbing because women who have survived violence and family members of femicide victims often turn to CAIMUS for support; thus, the office contains documents with confidential information that could negatively affect the security of these women and Association members.

The Petén Ixqik Women’s Association is an organization with an acclaimed history of more than 20 years of work in defense of the human rights of women in Petén.

We of IM-Defensoras and the Network of Women Defenders in Guatemala hereby acknowledge and express our solidarity with the Petén Ixqik Women’s Association and demand that the Guatemalan government conduct a diligent investigation of the break-in without failing to provide security guarantees and protection fot CAIMUS and Association members.
