THE FACTS – On May 27, 2019, members of the Amorales Collective received subpoenas from the Sixth Sentencing Court in San Salvador. They are accused of the alleged slander of Ricardo Alfonso Mendoza Alberto.

Since 2016, comrade artists of Amorales have denounced Ricardo Mendoza, a drama professor at the University of El Salvador who, using his status to wield power, has committed sexual aggression against his female students by asking them to take off their clothes for him. This is not the first time he has been accused of similar sexually abusive actions in rehearsing theatre productions.

The Amorales Collective has a bold tradition of making complaints public through art to visibilize and denounce aggression suffered by women, artists and students. Through their art they also take up and vindicate the struggles of other companions who have bravely denounced abuses although their voices have gone unheard or have been silenced.

We of IM-Defensoras and the Salvadoran Women Defenders stand in solidarity with the comrades and support their stuggle. We repudiate any attempt to limit their defense work. We further demand that university and State authorities safeguard the security and integrity of these artists and defenders and that they guarantee university premises free of aggression.
