When UN Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders, Michel Forst, visited Honduras in August, representatives of IM-Defensoras and other national networks and groups had the chance to meet with him to discuss the situation in which we carry on our work as defenders in different countries. Our Co-Coordinator Alejandra Burgos presented him with an OPEN LETTER informing him of the attacks and impunity that women defenders deal with in the region. For the occasion, we of IM-Defensoras edited and provided him with 5 infographs, which contain data on attacks against women defenders in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, México and Nicaragua and reflect the information presented in our 2012-2014 Assessment Report on Attacks against Women Human Rights Defenders in Mesoamerica.
On Thursday, August 25, the Rapporteur participated in the forum on "Human Rights Defenders in the Northern Triangle: Advances and Challenges," in which participants also included our comrades Claudia Samayoa, a member of UDEFEGUA and the IM-Defensoras Driving Group, and Suyapa Martínez, of the National Network of Women Human Rights Defenders in Honduras.
On Friday, August 26 the Rapporteur met with Honduran organizations and individul defenders, many of whom belong to the National Network of Women Human Rights Defenders in Honduras. IM-Defensoras also played a role in getting specific reports to him on the situation of WHRDs in El Salvador and Nicaragua, prepared, respectively, by the Salvadoran Women Defenders Network and the Nicaraguan Women Defenders Network.
