Nazaret Cortés Velasco, Chair of the Ejido Commission of San Pedro Totolápam, Oaxaca and woman human rights defender, was killed during an armed attack in the early hours of 19 March 2026, when she was returning to her home. Her daughter was wounded in the attack.
Nazaret carried out important work defending land and territory, accompanying her community in protecting natural resources, the environment, and their collective rights in a difficult context for those engaged in this work.
In light of these events, it is essential that prompt, thorough investigations be conducted with a human rights-based approach, recognizing her work as an agricultural authority and a woman defender. Furthermore, it is crucial to strengthen protection measures for her family, her community, and human rights defenders in the region.
Recognizing and appreciating the work of those who defend human rights is vital to achieving equality, social justice, and collective wellbeing.
