[WHRD Alert] MEXICO / Triqui woman defender Emelia Ortiz García has her home raided and belongings stolen, and faces constant persecution and harassment.

Triqui woman defender Emelia Ortiz García, who is a leader of the Movement for Triqui Unity and Struggle (MULT) and secreatry of the Triqui Nation Cultural House, has denounced another act of intimidation against her that took place on the night of Tuesday 22 April. On her return from the Rastrojo community, she noticed that her home had been raided and that personal documents and other belongings had been stolen. This serious breach of her security is part of the constant persecution, harassment and intimidation that she has faced since she began demanding justice for the 5 November 2024 femicide of her sisters Virginia and Adriana  and for the disappearance of her cousins Virginia and Daniela, who have been missing in the Mixtec region since 5 July 2008.

The woman defender reported that on two occasions, unknown persons have come to the place where she holds her belongings and have stolen and ransacked them, breaking the locks on the doors and the glass on the windows; they also extracted documents containing complaints regarding the murder and disapperances of her comrades.

Emelia, who is beneficiary of precautionary measures, states that those responsible for these acts are members of the Independent Movement for Triqui Unity and Struggle (MULTI), an organization set up in 2006 when some activists split off from the Movement for Triqui Unity and Struggle (MULT).

Emelia Ortiz García is a woman human rights defender with a long and recognized track-record, she has spent more than 25 years accompanying the Triqui Peoples in the cultural recovery of their clothing.

The National Network of Women Human Rights Defenders in Mexico and IM-Defensoras demand urgent guarantees of protection for Emelia Ortiz García, a diligent investigation of the facts and an end to the impunity with which her assailants operate.

We call for solidarity with the woman defender and we hold the Mexican State, at all levels of government, responsible for any new attack against her integrity and security.
