Registry of Aggressions against Mesoamerican Women Human Rights Defenders: May 2022 – Preliminary monthly data for El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua.

May 2022: 342 aggressions against 73 WHRDs.

  • One defender was killed: Cecilia Monzón López in San Pedro Cholula, Puebla, México.

  • The women defenders experiencing the most attacks were those who work for the right to defend land and territory (32%), the right of women to a violence-free life (20%) and women’s rights (15%).

  • The State continues to be the main perpetrator. 60% of the forces that commit some form of aggression are public authorities at all levels of government –local, state, and federal– (33%) and police forces (31%).

  • 35 women defenders were attacked while engaging in collective actions for human rights defense.

An average of 300 to 400 attacks against women defenders each month.

  • From the first of the year until the end of May, we have registered 1,466 attacks against 331 women defenders, thereby establishing.
