THE FACTS – On Saturday, September 7 at 7:20 pm, several individuals riding in a vehicle shot and killed Diana Isabel Hernández while she was participating in a procession in her Monte Gloria community in Santo Domingo Suchitepéquez.
Diana Isabel Hernández was a teacher, human rights defender, and Coordinator of the Environmental Ministry of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, where she fostered the care and protection of the environament and natural resources by initiating projects such as family orchards, forest nurseries, reforestation in green areas and clean-up campaigns.
We of IM-Defensoras and the Network of Women Human Rights Defenders in Guatemala repudiate this brutal murder and express our deepest solidarity with the family and comrades of Diana Isabel Hernández.
We demand that the Guatemalan government conduct a prompt, thoroughgoing investigation to ensure that justice is done and that impunity does not prevail. We remind the government of its obligation to guarantee protection and the free exercise of the right to defend rights of all human rights defenders in the country.
