Association for Mutual Support among Women in Honduras (APOMUH)
THE FACTS – Around 2 pm on Saturday, May 25th, defender Maricruz Tolvez was killed in Choloma, Cortés.
According to information provided by the National Network of Women Human Rights Defenders in Honduras, the defender was at her work place, a beauty parlor located in the Las Cascadas residential area, when unknown armed assailants burst into the place and shot her in the head.
Maricruz belonged to a member organization of the National Network of Women Human Rights Defenders in Honduras, APOMUH, which, since 2003, has contributed to the comprehensive development of women in order to improve their life conditions. The organization fosters processes of training and education in women’s rights, while denouncing the violence they face and making it visible.
We of IM-Defensoras repudiate and condemn this horrible crime and demand a prompt, thoroughgoing investigation, leaving no stone unturned, especially regarding motives related to her work in defense of human rights, so that this murder will not go unpunished.
We stand in solidarity with the family of Maricruz and her comrades in APOMUH and the National Network of Women Human Rights Defenders in Honduras. In these moments of deep sorrow and outrage, we embrace them and offer our support and backing.
